For the most part, I consider Northlanders to be a highly unique comic series...
The second volume of "Buffy Season Eight" was really fun to read...
Zoom-in on Colorado, and look for a small town near the mountains. Zoom-in some more and enter sophomore year in high school. Come a bit closer and meet Penny, our blonde freckled teen heroine, in this light-weighted-fun-girls' comics, the first volume of "Fool's Gold".
Penny's classes this year are English, Geology, Current events, Geometry, Drama and Racket sports. I bet you're thinking right now, Isn't Geology class way too boring? Not if it teaches you something important about boys! You see, some boys seem to have it all, but they will only end up hurting you. They are just like the Pyrite rocks: they're fool's gold! Some of you may be more familiar with the term *jerks*, though.
Penny's mission for this year, save for studying, is to change the social balance in her high school. She forms the secret Geology club, where all girls can learn how to tell the difference between real gold and fool's gold. Favor the good guys, away the reign of jerks! Poor Mrs. Preston, the Geology teacher, she has no idea what the girls are really up to in Geology club.
"Fool's gold" is Amy Reeder Hadley's very first Comics series; she was discovered in an annual contest Tokyopop holds. I picked up this book, since I was so impressed by her amazing art work in " Madame Xanadu", her currently ongoing series for Vertigo comics.
Amy's exceptional art work continues to dazzle me:) all the characters are beautifully depicted. Fun details like hair style and clothes are always a priority. Amy does the best job in portraying the moods and facial expressions of her characters. Her unique style diverges from the classic Manga style, where it's all about big eyes and pointy chins. Amy's characters are more realistically portrayed.
The only two down sides of this book are, the poor paper quality, and the fact that it is a black and white comics. Oh well, no one's perfect.
The plot is very simple, nevertheless the book is so much fun, especially for teen girls, but one older girl (me) liked it too.
